    dissertationHands are so central to the human experience, yet we often take for granted the capacity to maneuver objects, to form a gesture, or to caress a loved-one’s hand. The effects of hand amputation can be severe, including functional disabilities, chronic phantom pain, and a profound sense of loss which can lead to depression and anxiety. In previous studies, peripheral-nerve interfaces, such as the Utah Slanted Electrode Array (USEA), have shown potential for restoring a sense of touch and prosthesis movement control. This dissertation represents a substantial step forward in the use of the USEAs for clinical careâ€"ultimately providing human amputees with widespread hand sensation that is functionally useful and psychologically meaningful. In completion of this ultimate objective, we report on three major advances. First, we performed the first dual-USEA implantations in human amputees; placing one USEA in the residual median nerve and another USEA in the residual ulnar nerve. Chapter 2 of this dissertation shows that USEAs provided full-hand sensory coverage, and that movement of the implant site to the upper arm in the second subject, proximal to nerve branch-points to extrinsic hand muscles, enabled activation of both proprioceptive sensory percepts and cutaneous percepts. Second, in Chapter 3, we report on successful use of USEA-evoked sensory percepts for functional discrimination tasks. We provide a comprehensive report of functional discrimination among USEA-evoked sensory percepts from three human subjects, including discrimination among multiple proprioceptive or cutaneous sensory percepts with different hand locations, sensory qualities, and/or intensities. Finally, in Chapter 4, we report on the psychological value of multiple degree of freedom prosthesis control, multisensor prosthesis sensation, and closed-loop control. This chapter represents the first report of prosthesis embodiment during closed-loop and open-loop prosthesis control by an amputee, as well as the most sophisticated closed-loop prosthesis control reported in literature to-date, including 5-degree-of-freedom motor control and sensory feedback from 4 hand locations. Ultimately, we expect that USEA-evoked hand sensations may be used as part of a take-home prosthesis system which will provide users with both advanced functional capabilities and a meaningful sense of embodiment and limb restoration

    Multi-Scale Entropy Analysis as a Method for Time-Series Analysis of Climate Data

    Evidence is mounting that the temporal dynamics of the climate system are changing at the same time as the average global temperature is increasing due to multiple climate forcings. A large number of extreme weather events such as prolonged cold spells, heatwaves, droughts and floods have been recorded around the world in the past 10 years. Such changes in the temporal scaling behaviour of climate time-series data can be difficult to detect. While there are easy and direct ways of analysing climate data by calculating the means and variances for different levels of temporal aggregation, these methods can miss more subtle changes in their dynamics. This paper describes multi-scale entropy (MSE) analysis as a tool to study climate time-series data and to identify temporal scales of variability and their change over time in climate time-series. MSE estimates the sample entropy of the time-series after coarse-graining at different temporal scales. An application of MSE to Central European, variance-adjusted, mean monthly air temperature anomalies (CRUTEM4v) is provided. The results show that the temporal scales of the current climate (1960–2014) are different from the long-term average (1850–1960). For temporal scale factors longer than 12 months, the sample entropy increased markedly compared to the long-term record. Such an increase can be explained by systems theory with greater complexity in the regional temperature data. From 1961 the patterns of monthly air temperatures are less regular at time-scales greater than 12 months than in the earlier time period. This finding suggests that, at these inter-annual time scales, the temperature variability has become less predictable than in the past. It is possible that climate system feedbacks are expressed in altered temporal scales of the European temperature time-series data. A comparison with the variance and Shannon entropy shows that MSE analysis can provide additional information on the statistical properties of climate time-series data that can go undetected using traditional method

    Development and testing of a risk indexing framework to determine field-scale critical source areas of faecal bacteria on grassland.

    This paper draws on lessons from a UK case study in the management of diffuse microbial pollution from grassland farm systems in the Taw catchment, south west England. We report on the development and preliminary testing of a field-scale faecal indicator organism risk indexing tool (FIORIT). This tool aims to prioritise those fields most vulnerable in terms of their risk of contributing FIOs to water. FIORIT risk indices were related to recorded microbial water quality parameters (faecal coliforms [FC] and intestinal enterococci [IE]) to provide a concurrent on-farm evaluation of the tool. There was a significant upward trend in Log[FC] and Log[IE] values with FIORIT risk score classification (r2 =0.87 and 0.70, respectively and P<0.01 for both FIOs). The FIORIT was then applied to 162 representative grassland fields through different seasons for ten farms in the case study catchment to determine the distribution of on-farm spatial and temporal risk. The high risk fields made up only a small proportion (1%, 2%, 2% and 3% for winter, spring, summer and autumn, respectively) of the total number of fields assessed (and less than 10% of the total area), but the likelihood of the hydrological connection of high FIO source areas to receiving watercourses makes them a priority for mitigation efforts. The FIORIT provides a preliminary and evolving mechanism through which we can combine risk assessment with risk communication to end-users and provides a framework for prioritising future empirical research. Continued testing of FIORIT across different geographical areas under both low and high flow conditions is now needed to initiate its long term development into a robust indexing tool

    Suicide by hanging is a priority for suicide prevention:method specific suicide in India (2001-2014)

    Background: India accounts for over a quarter of the global burden of suicide. One of the most effective population level suicide prevention strategies has been restricting access to suicide means. Method: Trends in method specific suicide rates (2001-2014) were calculated using National Crime Records Bureau data stratified by sex, age-group, and geographical region. Multilevel negative binomial regression models stratified by sex and suicide method were specified to investigate associations between state-level indicators of economic development, education, agricultural pesticide use and religious factors. Results: Suicide by hanging increased by 56% (from 3.9 to 6.1 per 100,000) among males and by 24% (from 2.1 to 2.6 per 100,000) among females over the study period while incidence of insecticide poisoning decreased by 44% (from 2.7 to 1.5 per 100,000) among males and by 52% (from 1.7 to 0.8 per 100,000) among females. In general, states with higher levels of development, higher agricultural employment and higher literacy had higher rates of suicide for each suicide method. States with higher levels of agricultural pesticide use had higher rates of insecticide poisoning suicides. Limitation: Reported rates might be an underestimation of the true rates as the official data used for the analysis likely underestimates the actual number of suicide deaths in India. Conclusion: Responsible reporting of suicide by hanging in the media, and limiting fictional portrayals of this method may be useful areas for prevention. Further restrictions on production and sales of highly hazardous pesticides may also help with further reductions in suicide by pesticide poisoning
